Extract from Abbey Week of the 29th May 2010 entitled: “New gold cope for Dean”:
“The Dean wore a new gold cope for the 450th anniversary service. The best cloth of gold cope which the Dean used to wear, but which was too short, belonged to Joost de Blank, who was archbishop of Cape Town from 1957 to 1963 before becoming a Canon of Westminster.
Christopher Jonas CBE, with his wife Dame Judith Mayhew Jonas DBE a regular worshipper at the Abbey, is a trustee of the Abbey Pension Fund, and was Master of the Clothworkers company. During Christopher’s time as Master the Dean and Chapter received a gift of £5,000 from the Clothworkers and decided to use the money on cloth for liturgical use and in particular on a best cope to fit the Dean.
The new cloth of gold was made by Watts and Company of Tufton Street, and uses the morse from Joost de Blank’s cope.”
