Crevelli

Around 1874, Thomas Garner, one of the founders of Watts, re-drew this pattern from the background of a 15th-century altarpiece by the Master of St Bartholomew. The pattern can also be seen in the work of the medieval painter Carlo Crivelli, whom the pattern is named after (Watts has kept the anglicised spelling 'Crevelli' used by Garner). Crivelli's ecclesiastical art features stunning, intricate patterns and abundant amounts of gold. This quality is carried forward into this cloth of gold, woven with a silk and lumiyarn blend. The metallic thread is complemented with highlights in different liturgical colours which showcase the complexity of the design.
