Benson Cowley Tapestry
This tapestry fabric was originally based on a Byzantine design which was then re-drawn by the 19th-century architect G. F. Bodley, one of the founders of Watts & Co. It is so called as this new design was intended for a cope for the Rev'd Richard Meux Benson, founder of The Society of St John the Evangelist (also known as The Cowley Fathers), an Anglican religious order. The ornate floral pattern and harmoniously varied colours make this one of our most versatile fabrics.
It can be used for altar palls and vestments alike and is a good festal fabric for all seasons.
The original Benson cope is part of the Elizabeth Hoare Collection of Embroidery at Liverpool Cathedral.
