Quatrefoil

The quatrefoil as a motif dates back to at least the 15th century and has been popular in architecture, art and textiles ever since. Meaning ‘four leaves’ it has been interpreted as a symbol of the cross, of the four Gospels or as a four-leafed clover. This decorative motif reached its peak of popularity in the Gothic and Renaissance eras. In our 'Quatrofoil' it is stylised and woven on a medium scale to give it great versatility. The silk weave of the quatrefoils lends a subtle lustre, and the different colour palettes create contrasting effects: either projecting the pattern outwards or blending the pattern into its background.
