This magnificently embroidered cope features the early Christian symbol of the peacock. In pre-Christian times it was thought that the flesh of the peacock never decayed. This led to the peacock being adopted in Christian art as a symbol of the resurrection and eternal life. Representations of peacocks surrounding a Chi Rho are found in early Christian catacombs and mosaics as early as the 4th century AD.

These symbols are exquisitely embroidered on the hood, orphreys and morse of a Westminster style cope, with a matching Tufton stole.

The main fabric is our ‘Comper Cathedral’ silk damask in Comper Purple. The orphreys and morse are in our ‘Bellini’ silk damask in Oyster/Old Gold, outlined in our ‘Bellini’ Green Diamond & Lay braid, with gold cotton sateen lining. The back length is 60”.
